In the News, Again

A friend and former coworker of mine came by in the midst of my normally chaotic day to interview me for a story on Tattooed Hippie Pirate Mommas for The Dallas Observer. The kids made mudpies and then poured them all over each other so of course Stella needed to use that as an excuse to get naked. I'm not sure he'll be able to hear my voice over dogs barking at squirrels and kids shrieking. Good thing he took notes.

The new nanny needs a salaried job so I'm trying to find her something locally while simultaneously conducting interviews with potential nannies without any certainty of next week, next month or next year.

On top of that, it suddenly feels like there are 500 women who are all looking at me as a sort of role model or mentor or something, which scares the hell out of me since I dislike the spotlight and like disappointing people even less.

Tomorrow there will be cuddling with my babies and playing in forts and swinging high into the sky on the swingset. Nothing better than sweet kiddo squishies.

  3. Confession: I am a band-wagoner. I just discovered you from that story in the Observer. I applaud you for standing up for what you believe in and taking conservative blows in stride!

On another note, I am a former Dentonite... I graduated with a BS in Criminal Justice from UNT in 2009 and worked for the University until December 2011. I started a Master's and am looking to get back to Denton to finish school soon.

I have a unique view in being open-minded (I guess they like to call that Liberal... lol) in a close-minded career path: Government, Law Enforcement, etc...It pains me to hear that an NPO like the Children's Advocacy Center of Denton County would so blatantly refuse support from fellow community members. They work so closely with law enforcement [a good majority of which are also former or current (reserves) military] everyday and although folks like to think Tattoos started in Prison... the military has been around much longer... just sayin' (If my history there is incorrect, I apologize--just going off my minimal knowledge--I have not studied tattoo or military history) ... But, I do have 5 tattoos and a Degree... GASP! I also tend to speak my mind and think it's pretty freaking cool that you do too!

Good luck on your nanny search... at the risk of sounding creepy, I nanny-ed and cleaned houses for several years before and during college and would love to do it again if you're having trouble finding someone. I have a couple Denton references if you'd be interested in chatting with me about what you're looking for! My email is lindsey.taflinger@gmail.com or you can just respond on here.... or not! Totally up to you.

Just wanted to let you know that I think you're a badass, keep it up! :)

  4. CASA promotes and protects the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected by training volunteer advocates to improve the child's quality of life and serves as their voice within the court system to ensure they are placed in a safe, permanent and loving home. We'd love to have you as one of our donors. My own daughter is a "tattooed mom". Check us out. CASA of Collin County.

  5. Just saw the observer article online, and, thus, found my way here. I can't say I'm super awesomely tattooed (I have one, okay), but as a fellow weirdo kind of mom (my husband and I are both huge dorks, and he used to be an active member of the Dallas Trocars hearse club), it's to discover that there are others like me. It can be awfully WASPy out there in mom group land.

  6. As a fellow tattooed mom and a social worker/child protective services employee, I am appalled by the CAC refusing your donation. While I am writing in solidarity I also have another motive ;) I am involved in a relatively new and smaller nonprofit that is hugely important to their community, the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center. DARCC is the only free standing sexual assault service provider in Dallas County! We provide a 24 hour crisis line, hospital advocacy, free counseling, prevention services and much more! As you can imagine, that is a tall order for a staff of less than 10 and their small army of devoted volunteers. I have seen the staff work over 40 hours a week consistently and volunteers donate their time on the weekends and holidays to meet the large and growing need in our community. There is nothing like watching a few make such a huge difference. Being the rad, passionate and not only accepting of differences but champions of differences that they are I know they would humbly accept your generous donation if it has not found a good home yet :)
